आधुनिक खेती ने पर्यावरण पर बहुत बुरा असर डाला है. इसमे काफी CO2 का उत्सर्जन होता है और बहुत जमीन की जरुरत होती है. खेती करने के कुछ पुराने तरीके बड़े पैमाने की खेती को भी टिकाऊ बना सकते हैं. जैसे कि एग्रोफोरेस्ट्री - यानी, पेड़ों को फसल और मवेशियों के साथ जोड़ना.
