As many as eight people and a non-government organisation have approached Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) to adopt the pit bull dog that had mauled its 82-year-old owner to death in Kaiserbagh on July 12. Most of them said that it was a lone and freak incident for which the dog should not be blamed.
LMC chief veterinary officer, Abhinav Verma said, "We have received several offers from across the country for dog adoption. We have put it under 14-day observation and will make a final decision after that."
One of the applicants, Amit Jani (39), an industrialist in Meerut, when contacted told TOI, "When I heard about the Kaiserbagh incident, I was shocked but with people labelling the dog as vicious, I have decided to adopt it. I already have a pit bull and it never shows any aggression. I think such an incident can happen with any breed if proper care is not taken."
Entrepreneur and animal lover, Sujaat Suvarna (59), another applicant, who is a resident of Mumbai, said, "It was an unfortunate incident, but for that speechless animal cannot be blamed alone. LMC should not separate it from the owner, but if the owner doesn't want it back, I would be very happy to adopt."
Similarly, Gomtinagar-based NGO Jeev Aashraya, an animal shelter home, has also offered to adopt the dog.
