The Congress party has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his handling of the ongoing crisis in Manipur, highlighting his absence from the state despite its severe turmoil. On September 14, 2024, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh pointed out that while Modi continues to make travel plans across the country and internationally, he has "studiously avoided" visiting Manipur, which has been engulfed in violence since May 3, 2023.

Ramesh noted that a Commission of Inquiry was established on June 4, 2023, to investigate the causes of the unrest, but it has yet to submit its report, having been granted an extension until November 24, 2024. He emphasized that the suffering of the Manipuri people is ongoing, stating, "The anguish and agony of the people of Manipur continues unabated."

The Congress has accused the Modi administration of neglecting the state, with Ramesh asserting that the Prime Minister's inaction reflects a disregard for the lives of those affected by the violence. The ethnic conflict has resulted in over 220 deaths and thousands displaced, raising concerns about national security as sophisticated weapons have reportedly been used by militants.

The party plans to send a delegation to Manipur to assess the situation firsthand. Ramesh's remarks come amidst growing calls for Modi to take responsibility and engage with the crisis, with Congress leaders demanding a crackdown on insurgent groups and a swift resolution to the violence that has plagued the region for over 16 months.
