In a surprising move, Lakshman Dass Napa, a ruling BJP legislator from the Ratia reserve assembly constituency in Haryana, has resigned from the party after being denied a ticket to contest the upcoming state assembly elections. Napa, in a letter addressed to state party chief Mohan Lal Badoli, announced his resignation shortly after the BJP released its first list of 67 candidates for the October 5 polls.

The BJP has fielded former Sirsa MP Sunita Duggal from the Ratia constituency. Interestingly, in a surprising move during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Duggal was denied re-nomination from Sirsa, and former Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar, who had joined the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, was given the ticket instead. However, Tanwar lost to Congress veteran Kumari Selja.

The BJP's initial list of candidates also features Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, the sitting MLA from Karnal, who has been shifted to the Ladwa seat. Several recent entrants to the party have also been rewarded with poll tickets.

The BJP is aiming for a third consecutive term in Haryana but faces a tough challenge from a resurgent Congress party, which is looking to capitalize on the anti-incumbency sentiment. The Congress is banking on the popularity of its veteran leaders and the disgruntlement among BJP supporters due to ticket distribution.

The counting of votes for the elections to the 90-member Haryana Assembly will take place on October 8. The BJP's chief ministerial face for the assembly polls is Nayab Singh Saini.

The resignation of Lakshman Dass Napa is a significant blow to the BJP's election prospects in Haryana, as it highlights the growing discontent within the party's ranks over ticket distribution. The Congress, on the other hand, is hoping to capitalize on this situation and make a strong comeback in the state
