Tropical Storm Ileana Brings Heavy Rainfall to Southern Gulf of California

Tropical Storm Ileana, which had been pounding the resort areas of Los Cabos in Mexico's Baja California Sur state, has now moved northward over the southern Gulf of California. In response to the storm's progression, the Mexican government has issued a tropical storm warning for the coast from Altata to Huatabampito in the state of Sinaloa, while discontinuing all watches and warnings for Baja California Sur

As of Saturday (September 14, 2024), Ileana was moving at a speed of 7 mph (11 kph) and was located approximately 70 miles (110 km) east of La Paz, Mexico. The storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center

Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Concerns

Tropical Storm Ileana has brought heavy rainfall to the region, with forecasters predicting 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 centimeters) of rain in the affected areas. However, some coastal regions, such as those in the states of Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco, could see up to 12 inches (30 centimeters) of rainfall through Friday

The heavy downpours have raised concerns about flash flooding and mudslides in portions of western Mexico and southern Baja California Sur. Authorities have urged residents to avoid crossing rivers, streams, and low-lying areas where they could be swept away by floodwaters

Precautionary Measures and Shelter Preparations

In response to the storm, the entire municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos in Baja California Sur were placed on red alert on Friday. This meant that efforts were underway to inform the population, implement measures, and prepare for potential evacuations to temporary shelters

All schools in Los Cabos were suspended on Friday due to the storm, and authorities prepared 20 temporary shelters in San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas to accommodate those in need

Residents and Tourists Advised to Stay Indoors

Residents and tourists in the affected areas have been advised to stay indoors until the storm passes. Óscar Cruces Rodríguez of Mexico's federal Civil Protection urged people to avoid leaving their homes until Ileana moves away, and if they live in flood-prone areas, to seek shelter in the designated temporary shelters

Ongoing Monitoring and Preparedness

As Tropical Storm Ileana continues its northward journey over the southern Gulf of California, authorities remain vigilant and are closely monitoring the situation. The issuance of the tropical storm warning for the Sinaloa coast indicates the potential for further impacts as the storm progresses

Residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised to follow the instructions of local authorities, stay informed about the latest developments, and be prepared to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The heavy rainfall associated with Ileana serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for severe weather events and taking appropriate actions to mitigate potential risks.
