Meta Prohibits RT and Other Russian State-Controlled Media Outlets
On September 17, 2024, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, announced a worldwide ban on RT (formerly known as Russia Today), Rossiya Segodnya, and other Russian state-controlled media outlets. This decision comes after a thorough evaluation by Meta, which found that these organizations employed deceptive tactics to conduct influence operations while evading detection on its platforms
In a statement, a Meta spokesperson elaborated, "Following thorough deliberation, we have intensified our ongoing measures against Russian state media outlets. Rossiya Segodnya, RT, and other associated entities are now globally barred from our applications due to their foreign interference activities."
The ban comes just days after the Biden administration unveiled sanctions against RT and other Russian media outlets, accusing them of being part of Moscow's intelligence apparatus and conducting covert information warfare operations worldwide. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of combating Russian disinformation, stating, "Our most potent remedy to Russia's falsehoods is the truth, illuminating what the Kremlin seeks to accomplish in secrecy."
Earlier this month, the U.S. Justice Department charged two RT employees with a $10 million scheme to create and distribute content to American audiences with hidden Russian government messaging. This secretive influence campaign allegedly targeted U.S. voters in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election. The U.S. government has long accused Russia of attempting to meddle in American elections by fostering discord.
