Are we ready for an asteroid attack? Astronomers conduct global exercise to test key ability

in #sant2 years ago

Asteroids, rocky remnants left over from the early formation of our solar system, have long been held as a deadly force capable of wiping out planets in their wakes, and they have done it before. Remember dinosaurs? They were wiped off from the face of the planet by an asteroid impact.

Now, countries are testing technologies that can face these deadly forces of the universe, that pass through Earth repeatedly and are at times classified as potentially hazardous even if they are millions of kilometers away. An international exercise has now been conducted with 00 participants from 18 countries to identify, limit, or even prevent, global devastation should an asteroid come closer to the planet.

Organised by the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) and Nasa’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO), the participants were given a task to identify an asteroid, that was once on its way to hit EarthScreenshot_2022-06-01-15-23-41.png
