Air India’s management is trying to do what the government couldn’t. While it has clinched a few better deals by leveraging Tatas’ scale, several important initiatives including an improvement in crew utilisation are pending. Tatas are focusing on slowly transforming the broader culture to address fundamental issues first rather than going all out for a blitzkrieg of change.
