More Rains to Lash Maharashtra; IMD Issues ‘Red’ Alert

The IMD on Tuesday issued a red alert to north Konkan, north-central Maharashtra, and east and west Vidarbha for the next three days. The state is expected to get relief from rains by August 12th, IMD said in its notice.

Various parts of Maharashtra have been witnessing heavy showers since Sunday and the IMD said the heavy rainfall is likely to continue over the state. The IMD has also issued an ‘orange alert’ for Marathwada, south-central Maharashtra and south Konkan. On Tuesday, morning some low-lying areas like the Andheri subway were submerged, forcing authorities to divert the traffic through alternate routes.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall along with strong winds lashed the state capital of Mumbai and its nearby areas on Tuesday, leading to a deluge in low-lying areas of the city. Strong winds gushed the Marine drive forcing the authorities to issue an alert near the seafront of the city. A number of local trains and buses in the city were running late by 5 to 15 minutes.

Earlier on Monday, the IMD had issued an orange alert for Mumbai, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas. After a hiatus of two weeks, the southwest monsoon has resumed activity across Maharashtra, bringing extremely heavy rainfall to the southern Konkan region.
