In Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, Congress leader Mufti Mehndi has been arrested by the police and sent to jail in a case involving the rape of a domestic worker. The incident occurred in the Abirgarh Tola area of Jaunpur Nagar Kotwali. Reports indicate that the arrested leader had previously contested for the position of councilor in the area under the party's symbol.
The police registered a case against Mufti Mehndi, a resident of Kajiya Mohalla, based on a complaint from a woman. The woman alleged that she had been working as a domestic helper at Mehndi's home since the age of 15, performing tasks such as sweeping, mopping, and washing dishes. She claimed that one day, Mehndi expressed his love and lured her into a physical relationship under the pretense of marriage, threatening to make a video of the incident and share it on social media.
Mehndi's wife, Kaniz Fatima, has claimed that the allegations are false and that the woman is trying to frame her husband for monetary gain, despite having worked in their home for a long time. Family members of Mehndi have stated that the case is quite old.
The police are conducting an investigation based on the evidence available. Jaunpur's Superintendent of Police (SP) Brijesh Kumar confirmed to the media that the police had arrested the wanted accused in the rape case. The case registered at Kotwali police station is numbered 356/2024, involving charges under various sections including the POCSO Act. Mehndi, aged 43, was apprehended near the Big Mosque intersection based on a tip-off. The police are continuing their investigation based on the evidence gathered.
