Hire Gowda (82), a resident of Karnataka, was taken to hospital on February 24. After being tested for the H3N2 virus on March 6, it was eventually determined that he had passed away from the infection on March 1. No further incidents were recorded in the Hassan district.

India has experienced a sudden rise in H3N2 influenza cases, with hospitals across the country reporting thousands of occurrences in recent months. This virus is an influenza A strain known to cause respiratory issues annually.

The ICMR has declared that H3N2 is responsible for a greater number of hospitalisations in comparison to other strains. Dr Randeep Guleria, formerly the director of AIIMS-Delhi, explained that flu brings along with it signs like fever, sore throat, coughing, body aches and runny nose. Diarrhoea, vomiting and difficulty breathing may also be associated symptoms.

The ICMR stated that the fever typically resolves after three days, yet coughing can continue up to three weeks. Dr Randeep Guleria mentioned that the virus has mutated, leading to a surge in cases and a decrease in immunity amongst people.

The ICMR has cautioned against self-management and antibiotics to deal with this flu outbreak. Instead, they recommend paracetamol to cope with any fever or body ache. Dr Randeep Guleria pointed out that wearing masks, frequent handwashing and physical distancing are the best ways to avoid infection with the virus.
