Sanket Sagar opened India’s account for CWG2022 on Day 2 clinching silver in men’s 55 kgs weightlifting with a total lift of 248 kg (113+135). The 21-year-old was up for heartbreak after his second attempt that missed his dream medal by chance.

In a comprehensive show, the first round witnessed a lift of 107kg. The audience was taken by surprise when the young lad attempted to lift 111kgs and 113kgs in his second and final effort but his right elbow was in no shape to let him carry the load. The Maharashtrian-born athlete closed his act of strength with a total of 248 kgs.
Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq lifted 142kg – a Commonwealth Games record in clean and jerk in his final attempt of the clean and jerk round to claim the gold medal with a total lift of 249kg (107+142). Sri Lanka’s Dilanka Isuru Kumara Yodage bagged the bronze with a total lift of 225kg (105+120).

Sanket is the son of a farmer belonging to Maharashtra. The three-time national champion began weightlifting in 2013 and also won a gold medal in the CWG last year.
