On Friday, the Anti-Corruption team from Varanasi apprehended Ranjan Kumar Gupta, a head constable (computer operator) stationed at the Machhlishahr police station, while he was accepting a bribe of 1,500 rupees. A case has been registered against him at the Sikrara police station.

He will be held overnight at the police station and taken to Varanasi the next day. The accused had been transferred to Machhlishahr from the Madiyahu police station three years ago, and this incident has caused a stir among police stations across the district.

The Incident

Arshad Ahmed, a resident of Mujhar village, had filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption team in Varanasi, stating that Ranjan Kumar Gupta was demanding a bribe of 1,500 rupees to process his passport application.
In response to the complaint, at 12:38 PM on Friday, Inspector Rajesh Yadav, along with Neeraj Kumar Singh, Rakesh Bahadur Singh, and a dozen plainclothes officers, arrived at the police station. They provided Arshad with two 500-rupee notes and five 100-rupee notes, treated with a chemical for identification.

As per the plan, Arshad approached Gupta at the designated time, and several plainclothes officers followed him. As soon as Arshad handed the notes to Gupta, the officers apprehended him. When they took him outside and washed his hands, the water turned red, confirming the bribe. The team then took him directly to the Sikrara police station, where legal proceedings were initiated, and he was sent to jail under various charges.
